In addition to his series of portraits in raw wool, Iranian artist Salman Khoshroo shapes pieces of dyed fibers into expressive busts. Figurative sculptures capture a range of emotions and vary in abstraction, sometimes using aquatic strands for the lips and eyelids and others remaining more true to a subject’s characteristics. Whether an intimate self-portrait or a playful figure with jackal teeth, the pieces bear witness to Khoshroo’s insightful and nuanced practice. “Building the face with sheer layers of thinned wool creates depth, much like frosting in paint, ”he writes of his process. “I regularly take self-portraits about one a year. This is the first sculpture and has a unique presence. (It) reminds me of my own mortality.
Khoshroo recently moved from Tehran to London to study at Goldsmith’s University, and you can follow his work, which includes impasto portraits and other fiber-based sculptures, on Instagram.
