Highlights of the 74th Cannes Film Festival

Hi Hollywoodians! Today we’re sharing some of our favorite moments from the 74th Cannes Film Festival. The prestigious festival took place July 6-17 and celebrated some of the greatest actors and filmmakers from around the world!

It was the first Cannes Film Festival since 2019, with the 2020 festival having been canceled due to the pandemic.

Cannes Film Festival 2021: notable winners

The Feature Films Jury is responsible for choosing the winners of the Cannes Film Festival. This year’s jury was chaired by the filmmaker Spike lee and also actors Melanie Laurent, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Tahar Rahim, and Kang-ho song, directors Mati Diop, Jessica hausner, and Kléber Mendonca Filho, and musical artist Mylène Farmer. Spike lee is the first black in the history of the Cannes Film Festival to lead the jury, as reported NBC News.

This year’s winner of the Palme d’Or (the festival’s highest distinction) was Titanium, directed by Julia ducournau. The stars of Franco-Belgian horror / thriller cinema Agathe Rousselle, Vincent lindon, and Garance Marillier. According to Deadline, Julia ducournau is only the second director to win the Palme d’Or.

Ghahreman (A Hero) and Hytti NRO 6 (Compartment n ° 6) tied for the festival Grand Prix. It is the second most distinguished award that feature films can win at the Cannes Film Festival. Ghahreman is an Iranian drama / thriller directed and written by Asghar Farhadi. Hytti NRO 6 is also a drama that was directed by Juho kuosmanen.

French director Leos Carax won the award for best director for his work on Annette featuring Adam Pilot, while the Best Screenplay Award went to Drive my car written by Ryusuke hamaguchi and Takamasa Oe.

Renate reinsive won the award for best actress and Caleb Landry Jones for best actor for their work in Verdens Verste Menneske (The Worst Person in the World) and Nitrame, respectively.

Tian Xia Wu Ya (All the crows in the world) directed by Tang Yi won the Palme d’Or for short films and Razzhimaya Kulaki (Clench fists) directed by Kira Kovalenko won the Un Certain Regard award (“from another angle”).

The Camera d’Or prize went to Murina, a drama directed by Antoneta Alamat Kusijanović. According to cannes film festival, the Camera d’Or “is awarded to the best first film of the Official Selection, of the Critics ‘Week and of the Directors’ Fortnight”.

Cannes Film Festival 2021: the looks of the red carpet

In addition to the wonderful films, the Cannes Film Festival showcased some stunning looks from our favorite movie stars and pop culture icons.

Cannes Film Festival 2021: notable film screenings for the next releases

The French dispatch stars Timothée Chalamet, Elisabeth Mousse, Bill Murray, Saoirse Ronan, and Tilda swinton, among many other notable players. Directed by Wes anderson, the film focuses on three different storylines and, according to IndieWire, is described as “a love letter to journalists installed in an outpost of an American newspaper in Paris”.

The New York Times reported that after its Cannes Film Festival premiere on July 12, The French dispatch received a nine-minute standing ovation. The dramatic comedy also made Hollywood reporter list of the critics’ favorite films at the Cannes Film Festival.

Still water is a crime drama directed by Tom mccarthy than the stars Matt damon and Abigail Breslin. The film was presented in the Out of Competition category of the Cannes Film Festival. Still water follows that of Matt Damon character as he tries to clear his daughter’s name after she was wrongly arrested for murder.

According to Variety, Matt damon was “moved to tears” during the standing ovation Still water received after its premiere on July 8.

The velvet metro is a documentary film about a rock band of the same name, directed by Todd haynes. NPR called the film “richly immersive” and named it one of the seven must-see films at the Cannes Film Festival.

Feathers won the Critics’ Week Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival. According to Variety, the film directed and written by Jean Ruane takes place in modern-day Egypt and focuses on a mother of three whose idealistic husband is unexpectedly transformed into a chicken by a magician.
