US Navy navigates nuclear submarine in Strait of Hormuz

The entry of ships into the area comes amid heightened tensions with Iran, with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo accusing Iranian-backed militias of rocket attacking the US Embassy compound in Baghdad, Sunday.

Some US officials have expressed concern that Iran might use the anniversary of General Qasem Solemani’s murder to lead an attack on the United States.

The US Navy rarely discusses the movement of its submarines, but Monday’s announcement also included details of the ship’s capabilities, including its “ability to carry up to 154 Tomahawk land attack cruise missiles.”

Eight rockets were fired into the Baghdad international zone on Sunday, causing damage to buildings and cars in a residential area near the United States Embassy. The U.S. Embassy complex sustained minor damage, but no embassy staff were injured. The Iraqi military said an Iraqi soldier was injured when a rocket landed near a security checkpoint.

“The United States strongly condemns the latest attack by Iranian-backed militias on the international area of Baghdad,” Pompeo said in a statement on Sunday. “We wish those who are injured a speedy recovery.”

Iranian Foreign Minister Saeed Khatibzadeh spokesman strongly condemned Pompeo’s statement, saying the Iranian embassy is also located in the international zone.

“The Iranian embassy is in the same area, attacking diplomatic missions and residential areas is a mistake and prohibited by international law,” Khatibzadeh said at a virtual press conference held Monday in Tehran, the Iranian capital. , attended by representatives of the local and international media.

“The statement issued by the US Secretary of State is suspect. We strongly condemn the statement by the US Secretary of State,” Khatibzadeh added, responding to a question from a local Iranian journalist.
